4 types of exercise that are perfect for seniors to stay fit and moving

    ChavezOctober 2, 2001

exercise is ideal for the elderly

As an older person, it can be difficult to stay active and fit for many reasons. Finding exercises that are appropriate for older adults and that benefit the right areas can be problematic. Below are some recommended exercises that seniors can try if they want to stay fit and mobile for the foreseeable future.

    Yoga on a chair

Chair yoga can be a great option for seniors who already struggle with mobility or whose health conditions reduce their ability to exercise. Chair yoga can be easily done at any time and helps keep muscles working and flexible. It can also help you relax and reduce stress, which is important when your loved one or you are in a nursing home, which can be anxiety-inducing for some.

Here’s a list of different positions you can try while doing chair yoga, which is especially good for people in nursing homes because it doesn’t pose much of a risk to the elderly. Only a small space is needed and it can be done alone. Nursing homes such as Signature Nursing Homes place a special emphasis on the health of their residents, including their physical fitness, and this can be an activity that can translate into a group activity.

    Walking

You should also consider whether walking can help you or your loved one; even walking around the block or stretching your legs for 10 minutes a day can be helpful. The greatest element of walking is that you go at whatever pace you like and that you can go as far as you can or want to go.

You may even decide to improve your walking ability by walking a little further each day. There are many apps that can track the number of steps you take in a day, and you can even ask a friend to walk with you, which can be important if you’re prone to falls. If you have trouble walking, even a walk around the yard can help you stay fit.

    Tai Chi

You should also consider tai chi as it is a calming and relaxing form of exercise that builds strength and mobility. You can start practicing Tai Chi regularly by taking a Tai Chi class or even downloading an app. There are even mobile apps that have been specifically designed to help seniors like you learn how to do and practice Tai Chi.

    Swimming

Swimming is one of the best exercises for seniors because it puts less pressure and stress on the limbs and joints, and many doctors even recommend it when you’re recovering from surgery or a medical condition, as it can help with muscle inflammation. Therefore, you should look for a local pool or outdoor swimming area where you can swim. If you can’t swim, it’s never too late to learn, so look for classes to join.
